What is infrared sauna?

Heat therapies have been around for centuries through different modalities around the world.

Traditional sauna involves two different routes – wet sauna (or steam therapy) and dry sauna.  Wet sauna is produced by – YES! steamy hot water, such as in our shower, and the dry sauna is produced by different methods to heat rocks.  Both therapies heat the air around us, which then heats our bodies, in turn.

Infrared sauna is different in that it heats objects in the wave path rather than heating the air.  We can think of it like radiant heat in a century home – the objects in the room are warmed, rather than the air circulating.  Another example is our beautiful Sun!  Even on a frigid day, when we rest in sunlight, we absorb the warmth and the rays even if the air around us is chilled.  This is possible due to the nature of the infrared waves themselves.  These waves penetrate the skin and reach muscle and other soft tissue, promoting a relaxed state and a general sense of ease.

What are EMFs?

Electromagnetic fields (EMF) are areas of energy that are related to the use of a device that depends on an electrical current.  This is a common concern for some, as infrared saunas need that electricity to heat the panels that provide the warmth.  At Bloom Holistic Wellness, we took these concerns to heart as we did our research and feel confident that the ultra-low EMF model that we chose for our space will alleviate some of that concern.

What are the benefits of infrared sauna?

Studies have shown that infrared sauna is useful in
- pain relief
- decreasing inflammation in joints and tissues
- detoxification
- boosting immune health
- reducing stress
- improving sleep
- improving heart health
- promoting collagen production and healing in the layers of our skin

As with other modalities, it’s important to do your own research and consult with your medical provider to be sure that infrared sauna therapy is a good fit for you.  You are your best advocate for health and wellness!
